HYDROGEL PROMOTES SURVIVAL AND MATURATION OF NEURAL CELLS

Neural stem cells have the ability to become many kinds of mature neural cells, and are therefore an attractive source of cells for repairing the stroke-injured brain in regenerative medicine. One such mature cell type, an oligodendrocyte, is shown here growing on a modified hydrogel: a bioengineered scaffold that provides chemical cues to direct cell survival, adhesion, and maturation. This illustration was published on the front cover of the Journal of Materials Chemistry, showcasing ongoing research at the Shoichet Lab at the University of Toronto.
